Frazer Beach Ride 8th December 2022
Thank you to the weather gods for a near perfect summer riding day. Not too hot, no rain and a breeze to keep us comfortable in all the gear.
We had two new Dave’s riding with us today so they were given an obligatory dose of the clap. One on a VStrom and the other on a Harley but sadly only one made it to morning tea. We also lost the dromosagnosian Danny at the same time🙁
So here’s the thing, apparently the new corner marking system, whilst very effective, needs a couple more tweaks to go with the TEC not waiting for latecomers to refuel.
- The Leader has an obligation to pick a spot for the corner marker that is safe, gives enough warning to the ride group AND is very visible. The Marker has an obligation to mark the corner as and where requested, with indicator and arm signals to the ride group and not randomly decide to turn into the corner, stop in the shade where they are hard to see, side on so indicators are ineffective. The result will be that ALL of the ride group will see said Marker and not accidentally ride straight past ending up in Wollombi and Broke respectively !
- When riders plan to leave the ride group mid-ride it is right and good to tell the Leader and TEC of the plan but also it would be best to leave the group FROM THE BACK OF THE PACK. This will avoid the TEC having to chase after riders (I know, there’s no cure for stupid) who ignore the poor old corner marker, sitting there with indicator on and arm out, and blindly follow the riders leaving the ride group.
OK rant over and my thanks to the 23 riders who turned up today for a ride to Fraser’s Beach, I’m glad for the 19 that made it to the planned destination.
The route for today’s ride was dictated by road conditions so armed with the knowledge that Jilliby Rd had recently been repaired I decided that we would stop for smoko at Dooralong Hall. Other than that it was the standard Old Pacific Hwy, Calga, Mangrove Mt, Kulnura, Bumble Hill, Yarramalong Valley, Mandelong, Wyong Rd to Ruttleys, Pacific Hwy to Elizabeth Bay and into the Conservation Area.
As we all know “Life is what happens whilst you’re busy making other plans” and the Live Traffic app still thinks Her Majesty is alive and kicking🤣 So it will come as no surprise (well it did to me actually) to find that Spring Rd was closed so we had to continue up to Kulnura to catch Greta Rd instead to reach the Valley.
As mentioned above we lost 2 riders before Dooralong, another two left the group at Wyong Rd where we also nearly lost a couple more 😬 However for the most part the roads were relatively clear and the pace was brisk right to the back of the pack. My thanks to KTM Pete for excellent TEC duties and to all the corner markers for their diligence, well maybe all BAR ONE😄
The beach was deserted due to dangerous surf conditions so we had the run of the place but the sea breeze definitely had a bite to it. Also missing was the local avian population which meant we got to eat all of our lunches in peace. Issues were debated and problems were solved, it makes you wonder sometimes why we aren’t in government🤪
On the return leg a goodly number made it back to the Pie for a wind down coffee and chin-wag. Anyway a great day for a ride, great company and a great vista at the beach to complete the day.
Thanks all, till next time.
Andy
