Braidwood Ride 25-26th Oct 2023

History: Europeans explored the area  in the summer of 1822 and shortly afterwards  DrThomas Braidwood Wilson, a surgeon, was granted land in the area. Wilson, eschewing modesty, named his farm 'Braidwood' so that when part of the farm was resumed for the town it was a simple step to name the town Braidwood.

 

Starters: Erica, Steve S, Rob T, Peter W, Frosty, Peter C, Kim & Yours truly.

 

Day 1: McGraths Hill, Lithgow, Oberon, Taralga, Goulburn, Bungonia, Tarago, Braidwood....415km

 

Dinner: Royal Hotel

 

Day 2: Braidwood, Gunning, Blayney, Lithgow, Bilpin, McGraths Hill.....487km

 

Weather: Day 1 great although slightly on the cool side. Day 2 Cold and fine until lunch then showers to Lithgow, then 5 degrees and rain to Bilpin, thereafter fine.

 

EEE: Erica's Enterprising Escapades. Day 1 and Erica disappears whilst we were gassing up...eventually the lady in red arrives flustered and dis-shelviled.....she had locked herself in the local Loo and took an eternity to bust her way to freedom.

 

Later in the day we encountered some roadworks heading into Oberon where the road had just been dug up by a grader. The surface was quite loose and lumpy and following an incident where one of the bikes decided to lay down, Erica decided to park hers as the way ahead looked too daunting. The Grader driver came down to investigate and proceeded to ignore  the geriatric male entourage and immediately went to assist the damsel in distress......yep he jumped on Erica............oops Erica's bike and in true Chris Hemsworth style rode her bike to safety though the quagmire without a helmet , his muscular thighs glistening in the sunlight and hugging her trusty steed! Erica was besotted and breathlessly hoped the shining knight would sweep her off her feet, lift her up into the cab of his Grader and drive off into the sunset.......she then snapped out of her trance and lept on her bike to continue the journey with with the magnificent seven crusty old riders. Believe it or not!

Tallowa Dam Ride 29th Jan 2026

Well, didn't we have a great time yesterday. Nine riders gathered at McDonald's at Heathcote for a 9.30 start. Promising to be a beautiful day around 24° where we were riding and lots of twisty roads in the destination area, so what could be better. Rocket was there on his new BMW R 1300 GS in all its glory, ready to put it through its paces.   Unfortunately I had to change the end destination, because a bit of research a few days earlier showed that the road to Tallowa dam had suffered storm damage and was closed now, and unlikely to be opened until the middle of the year. Fortunately, there is an equally good destination called Camberwarra Mountain Lookout - about the same distance and all nice twisty roads to get to it so off we went. Steve Sampson on his blue 1250 RT volunteered as tail end Charlie, so everything was sorted.   We turned off the highway into the Royal National Park at Waterfall, went through Stanwell Tops Lookout, up to Helensburg and then back onto the old...

4 Ferries Ride 22nd Jan 2026

Last year I led a four ferries ride, that turned out to be a 2 ferries ride. This year the four ferries ride turned into a no ferries ride. Frosty was looking at his phone and informed me that 2 of the ferries were closed. Apparently because of the recent heavy rain. So I had to come up with a new plan. I made an executive decision to go to Catherine Hill Bay. Most people were okay with the new plan, so we headed up the old road to Bumble Hill and the triangle for coffee break. It was here that I found out that the ride  in 2 weeks  is to Catherine hill Bay.  So the leader of that ride decided to make it a four ferries ride. Worked out pretty well. Then it was up Hue Hue road to Wyee and then a right turn to the  Pacific Highway and on to Catherine Hill Bay. It was a beautiful day, although a bit breezy. Swansea Ride - 7th November 2024

RIDE REPORT Let’s Swan off to Swansea, 20 or so Riders gathered (all champing to get away) at the Berowra Servo. The weather looked “iffy”, but that didn’t deter. Knowing that, with my Motoguzzi Italian Stallion, everyone would overtake me, the executive decision was made – meet at Jerry’s (Kulnura) for coffee – and almost immediately the weather improved and Suitcase took the lead – thanks for that. On arrival at Jerry’s, I felt a frisson of friction – our Hills Rider (A) was being harangued by an irate Hog rider for “daring” to block his exit and, despite an apology and (A) moving his bike, the Hog Rider proved to be the ‘perfect gentleman’ by ignoring the apology, and literally spitting at A, before spluttering off to his next confrontation. Excitement over, we farewelled Jerry and Mrs Jerry, with Tony leading us down Bumble Hill to Yarramalong past the Pink Elephants, then to Hue Hue Road, Rutley’s Road and Pacific Highway, past the Monster-Prawn, along some familiar sweeping bends...

Wolombi Ride 4th July 2024

  With a lot of rain the previous few days - the sun rose to mixed conditions. The rain stopped momentarily on my ride to the meeting point at Berowra - but the the road was still very wet   As we gathered at the 7-11, then we watched 1,2 then 3 & 4 Candy cars pass us.   With one setting up about 200 meters down the road from us.   So the ride was going to be at the speed limit or slower with the wet conditions and usual debri, potholes, road works and Highway patrol cars to negotiate past.   The route to Wollombi is quite complicated - I counted a total of 2 corners to negotiate with a stop at Jerry's for morning tea.   There were 11 of us, all old faces that had done the route many times so we dispensed with corner marking.   Apart from the wet conditions - the most notable occurrence was seeing 3 Highway patrol cars at Cowan, we think discussing their lack of pay rise.   Jerry's was closed - but the ablutions block was open ...

Ride to Rumbalara Reserve - Sun 15th September

  Three of us (including Newbie Glynn) met at St Ives, set off for PITS Cowan, to find it packed with Classic Cars (how dare they) and teen bikers; we hastily departed, following the Old Road and Into East Gosford, stopping for Coffee n Cake at The Bakery – monstrous “snot-slice” – good coffee, sunshine. Did I mention that the weather was cool/cold, especially if not wearing winter gloves. With wind increasing, we originally found the Walking Path and THEN made use of   “Nellie-Never-Lost” to find Dolly Ave, leading us up, up, up and further UP into Rumbalara Reserve, all the way to the circular drive, then walked around, meeting pioneers Captain Charles Sturt, Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, and Captain Matthew Flinders – all larger than life-size bronze sculptures. (Edward Eyre was in hiding.) The ride downhill was also pretty exciting, dodging pot-holes, looking out for oncoming traffic on the narrow track –DONE.
