Dungog Ride 28th Mar 2014
Ride Report 28th March 2024 to Dungog NSW
It rained during the night so I made a mental note to give the Thursday ride to Dungog a miss…… then I realised I was leading the !@#$ ride. I dragged my sorry beetroot head out of bed, donned my trusty Rukka waterproof riding gear and headed to Berowra hoping no other moron would turn up. I was wrong there were fifteen morons hiding under the awning at the 7-Eleven with steady rain falling. Don’t these people have something better to do on a wet Thursday!!!
On Wednesday I received a couple of texts inquiring where the morning tea was. I told them Melbourne so they should have arrived there by now but they both piked out because of the inclement weather???
Back to the ride briefing. There were no virgins, except for one dishevelled creature claiming his virginity back due to lack of use or memory. I told the assembled group that DOUBLE DEMERITS were in force … much mumbling of I didn’t know etc. One rider decided it was time to head home so left us without even listening to the briefing!! The route was Calga, Somersby, M1 to Wyong Road exit, Tri-angle, Hue Hue road, Wyee road, Freemans Drive to morning tea at Freemans Waterhole which is approx. half distance to Dungog. We all arrived at Freemans Waterhole in one piece with Tony James my trusty TEC bringing up the rear. I was about to resume the ride after morning tea when I was confronted by Sir Rodney of the Underpants. He had formed a rebel group who were not going on to Dungog (wimps). They were going to Sandy Hollow??? Sandy Hollow that’s further than Dungog!! One of the rebels corrected Sir Rodney and said it was Sandy Creek Road to Wollombi. So eight of the original fourteen that left Berowra joined this mob of wusses. Even my TEC wimped out!!!
The magnificent six including Sir Danny of the new knee headed on to Dungog in the sure knowledge that we were going to complete the challenge of the Dungog loop and go into the history books as the few that made the ultimate sacrifice of the “Thursday Ride”.
The route to Dungog from Freemans Waterhole was, PelawMain, Maitland, Paterson, East Gresford, Dungog. The road from East Gresford to Dungog has some spectacular sweeping bends and scenery and the surface is quite good (in parts). Of course Sir Rodney and his wimps missed out on this …. poor deluded buggers. We headed to the park on the way north out of Dungog to have our luncheon. A couple of grey nomads quickly vacated the only available table when they saw this mob of tough bikers arrive!!! After lunch the “dirty” one of the group decided to return home via some exotic route on unsealed roads. The rest of us continued on the loop home via Clarence Town, Seaham, Raymond Terrace and the M1 (with a small detour in Raymond Terrace). I did a total of 456 kms door to door. A long day but no problem for REAL bike riders.
Thanks to Frostie, Lee, Peter, Andrew and Danny for staying the distance and a curse on the house of Sir Rodney of the Underpants and his motley crew.
Cheers
Alan
