Wentworth Falls Lookouts - Sunday 30th April

Today's Sunday ride to Wentworth Falls followed a rainy Saturday and forecast for cool weather and showers. We got these, but they didn't spoil what was an excellent day and a chance to view the Blue Mountains showing it's wilder side.

Three riders - enough for a quorum - departed St Ives and followed Victoria Rd and James Ruse Drive to Parramatta Road then toll-free onto the Western Motorway. We don't go this way often, and the novelty value, along with a short sharp shower passing the M7 Light Horse intersection, dispelled any thoughts of expressway boredom. And the bonus was that suddenly the Blue Mountains rushed up and we were pulling into the Visitor Centre carpark at Glenbrook.

Shall we mention the superb Bakery just opposite the park at Glenbrook shops? No, yes, no, well... yes. My apple danish was the best I've ever eaten. I didn't have time to share, it was gone. I don't need to eat ever again.

Back on the Great Western Highway and up the hill to the Kings Tableland turnoff and out to Lincoln's Lookout. This is a bit unusual in that there's NO guard rail at the 100 metre drop, so with the mist swirling about and the valley below appearing and disappearing it's a bit disconcerting and why there aren't scores of international visitors die here I've no idea. Selfie anyone? Just back up a bit.....oops!

Return to the Highway and round to the Leura exit and down past Fairmont to Sublime Point Lookout. This one has the BEST view of all, and worth the trip today on its own. A panorama from Leura Falls round past Katoomba, the Three Sisters, Narrow Neck, Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary, views way out towards Nattai and Mount Colong ( when the mist clears ) and east back to Lincoln's Lookout on Kedumba Walls. And a picnic table with mountain views and listen... is that a lyrebird?

Next we zigged and zagged across to the north side of the Highway and paused for a look-see and comfort stop at Wentworth Falls Lake before beginning our return ride down the Highway to Springwood, and out the Winmalee Road to the Hawkesbury Lookout.  Yesterday's rain has cleared the air and the crisp view right through to the Sydney skyline was the best I've seen for ages.

Time marches on and after quick goodbyes we headed down the twisties to Yarramundi and home variously via Annangrove and Galston, and the M2 and Roseville. Thanks for coming, another GREAT day!  Geoff W.
