PADPAL 4th June 2026

There were thirteen eager riders at Berowra 7-Eleven waiting to pounce on my arrival and to let me know that because I whimped out on my ride to Swansea Heads last week due to adverse weather conditions that I should lead that ride today. I was way ahead of them as I had already made up my mind to volunteer to do just that, so all their self-righteousness was quickly put back in the box!!!

 

The plan was to have morning tea at Jerry’s and then progress to Swansea Heads via Bumble Hill, Yarramalong, Hue Hue road, Rutleys road and Pacific Highway. All good.

We were honoured by the presence of our illustrious leader Rocket who bravely left his sick bed to make an appearance.

 

The weather was cool and occasionally overcast but at least the rain kept away.

 

At Jerry’s Rocket plus A. N Other left us for various reasons?? 

 

Unfortunately on the onward journey from Jerry’s there were a number of “phantom” roadworks which delayed our progress somewhat. Notwithstanding these delays we reached the rather forlorn park at Swansea Heads in reasonable time. The place hasn’t changed since the last time we were there, with fences round half of the park supposedly protecting us from some asbestos buried there. This made the seating arrangements rather cosy and the facilities were the literal “Brick Shithouse”.

With the weather looking a bit dodgy we made a quick exit and some of us headed back to the Pie for a review of the days proceedings plus an update on the orange cretin in the White (Shit) House.

 

Thanks to Rob Toshack for the arduous TEC duties which he performed with his usual subtle diplomacy.

  6 hardy souls braved the double whammy of double D’s AND inclement weather and apart from a very serious heart starter half way down the hill to the Peats Ferry bridge a good time was had by all. As Ride Leader I thought I would see how many things I could do wrong and my score got pretty high. Think no briefing, no TEC (although I think Tony was a close 2nd on that at the back, thanks Tony), no corner marking, leaving the pack behind (either that or they were giving me too much rope 😜 ) and I led the entire pack into a speed trap whilst doing a tad more than the posted limit 👍🏻🤣 .  I didn’t even manage to avoid all the very frequent showers although here I came a close second with only one brief downpour actually catching up with us and a couple of sprinkles whilst riding on very wet roads showing we had just dodged a bullet! I had even done a chain swap on my bike the previous week and not tested it, belatedly discovering I’d managed to fit the gear pedal one cog tooth...

Kangaroo Valley Ride 16th March 2023

  The forecast for today’s ride was into the high 30’s ‘Out West’ so we always knew that it would be a hot one!  And the forecast proved to be spot on.   It was a balmy 25 by the time ‘side stands up’ came around  at 10.00am  at Heathcote Maccas.  It was a day destined to go smoothly with Laurent S rolling in a full 10 mins before our planned departure, that being 9 mins 50 secs earlier than his usual arrival time.  Laurent joined the already assembled crew of four (Peter W, Jim C, Dave S and myself as Ride Leader).   During the ride briefing, I dutifully announced that I was a ‘Virgin’ Ride Leader (this being my first time out front) which led to them all giving me the welcoming ‘virgin clap’, which seems to be a particularly unfortunate thing to give any poor virgin.  They all laughed and promised to treat me gently and with respect, even the day after!  And to their word, they did.  Some even sent flowers!   With a group of ...

Eleebana Ride 3rd July 2025

  Well , 13 hardy souls showed up to the Berowra start point . Must have had the same thoughts as me - weather clearing , let’s get out there ! Nobody got lost this time , except for myself, missing the Spring rd turnoff to the Bumble hill , embarrassing, but soon rectified.  Weather was quite nice , morning tea at the Dooralong Hall pleasant . Rob McKee left us  here , the rest carried on .  The second part of the ride went well , we all made it to Eleebana together . The conversation leant towards “ Health Problems “ probably due to the average age of us being relatively high .  A quick zap down the motorway to the Pie , with more discussion on various subjects. Combined Ride to Grey Gums Cafe - Saturday 1st April 2023

 A fine and sunny day with a just touch of autumn cool. Seven UNB riders assembled at St Ives for chat and coffee. Welcome back to Jim D and Mark K, both of whom we haven't seen for a good while. Also arrived MTC, John W, John O, Bonny and yours truly. Departed 9.05am via Galston Gorge to Round Corner, then Annangrove Rd. to a stop at World Burger at Vineyard. More coffees, peel a layer off, top up the tank. On again at 10.30 for a short leg to Gov. Macquarie Park at Windsor to meet with the assembled group of around 60 or 70 bikes and riders from the Sydney Basin Ulysses Branches.  This is the third Combined Multi-Branch ride organised by the group, and numbers are swelling, with more riders coming from the Central Coast down the Putty Road today to meet with us at Grey Gums Cafe.  Welcome and ride info given by Eastern Creek Branch Pres.Tim Shelton, then off we went up the Putty Road. Kiama Ride 2nd March 2023

  Yesterday’s ride report to Kiama. This was to be my first ride for 2023. I leapt out of bed earlier than usual  (more like a slow roll to the edge of the bed enabling my legs the use of gravity to travel to the floor) as I needed to check the battery / tyres etc. Duly went through my morning rituals. I won’t go into the details but suffice to say being mustard gassed may have been a more pleasant experience!  The weather looked good and BOM indicated no rain. Pulled on my riding jeans and waddled off to brekkie. It then proceeded to piss down with rain so waddled back upstairs cursing BOM and put my other riding pants on. Normally, I meet up with my riding mate Dangerous Davis but he decided not to go south of the border rather he would join the PADPAL bunch and then go and mow his lawns at his Wangi Wangi ranch.
